“WITH LUCK TURNED TO THE MOON, ACCORDING TO THE TESTAMENT OF GYPSY ESMERALDA”
GRES IMPLEOPOLDINENSE ACTRESS | Carnival 2024
Synopsis – SUMMARY
I tell you, in the middle of Carnival, that a gypsy woman named Esmeralda left a written will that contains teachings so that dreams can be understood, or a person's fate can be revealed. The fact is that this will was brought to Brazil by a group of gypsies who, in a caravan and around bonfires, spread parties, music, circuses, dance and popular belief in what the will contained. I then tell you that this will ended up in my hands as a kind of magic manual for interpreting the delusions of those who sleep; of happy and unlucky dates, of the lines that cross the palm of the hand to trace destinies and of the planets that move. When I read it, ever since then, I want the joy of falling asleep in the arms of Morpheus to have a good dream, just like the lines written by the gypsy woman. Dreaming of a swan to wait for candor. Of a red rose, to be happy without delay. With my eyes closed, I dream of a bear or a monkey, so that, with my eyes open, I can have faith in the right game. To win in tens and hundreds. To break the bank when I get twelve in thousands and, the day before, in a dream, I see an elephant. Aware of what the will says, I only ask that you wake me up quickly if, in my dream, the figure of a sultan comes to visit me. I know by heart (and it was by reading the gypsy's will that I learned) that there are days when bad luck lurks. That's why, as a scoundrel that I am, I tread softly so as not to hesitate. I wait for that which is neither early nor late. What is mine – the gypsy told me – has a set date and time to arrive. It's written on the palm of my hand that the line of fortune will make my rush to keep the ball rolling worthwhile. That the life line is strong and that the love line is a thin line, almost a tightrope, where it is good to balance yourself with the expectation of not falling, while I wait for that smile that will paint the life I want (and that everyone wants) in rosy colors. I know that what is gained and lost is in the palm of my hand. That good weather and bad weather are in the sky. In the planets that change places. I tell you the secret that has inhabited the sky since the time of the pharaohs: when the stars move, those who make mistakes can also start to get it right. A tangled life can become rocky. Those who cry can then laugh. Those on top go down. Those on the bottom go up. The zodiac announces that luck will come, the sun enters Pisces, the moon shines in Aquarius, the tides change things, the calendar marks February, those who are good at it can be successful, school can take off. And that's where (it was the gypsy who told me before me) no one can hold, tie or imprison someone who was born with the fate of having luck turned towards the moon.

The Story of the Empress
The RECREATIVE GRÊMIO ESCOLA DE SAMBA IMPERATRIZ LEOPOLDINENSE is a Samba School in Rio de Janeiro, based in the Ramos neighborhood, in the northern part of the city. Founded on March 6, 1959 by pharmacist Amaury Jório, together with some samba artists from the Leopoldina Zone and remnants of the extinct Recreio de Ramos association, its name refers to the Leopoldina Railroad – which ran through the Ramos neighborhood – and which, in turn, received this name in reference to Empress Maria Leopoldina of Brazil.
Its flag features the colors green, white and gold, as well as the largest symbol, the royal crown. Along the mantle, eleven stars symbolize the neighborhoods that make up the region: Bonsucesso, Brás de Pina, Cordovil, Manguinhos, Olaria, Parada de Lucas, Penha, Penha Circular, Vila da Penha, Ramos and Vigário Geral, also covering the entire area of Complexo do Alemão and Adeus.
Legitimate heir to the revelers who, since the beginning of the 20th century, occupied the streets of Ramos and surrounding areas in the Leopoldina region with their carnival groups, Imperatriz Leopoldinense has the tradition of bringing together great samba artists around its flag.
The Rainha de Ramos – as it is affectionately known – has become known over time as a reference in the cultural role of samba schools, shining with its original themes, almost always linked to the history and culture of Brazil. It is also known as a breeding ground for great composers, including figures such as Zé Katimba and Niltinho Tristeza – author of the classic Tristeza, which ended up giving his artistic name.
And if we are going to talk about samba-enredo, the school is proud to have seen memorable samba-de-enredo songs such as “Brasil: “Loving flower of the three races”, “Oropa, France and Bahia”, “Martim Cererê”, “What does Bahia have?”, “Your hair does not deny it”, “Freedom! Freedom! Spread your wings over us” and many others.
In a world dominated by men, it also asserts itself as an institution that values female power, starting with its own name which, in a clever play on words, brings together one of the most powerful regions of the city (the Leopoldina area) with one of the most important and hard-working women in Brazilian history (Empress Leopoldina), active in the country's politics in a period that reserved secondary roles for women, and one of those responsible for our independence.
To give you an idea of the female strength in the school, Imperatriz was the first to break with the tradition of male Front Commissions, bringing in a group of dancers in 1969 to defend the issue that, until then, had always been formed by distinguished gentlemen from the old guard in other schools. In addition, there are many notable female figures, from the Flag Bearer Maria Helena, to the carnival designer Rosa Magalhães, the great Valquíria and the sisters Cátia and Simone Drumond, respectively executive president and president of the deliberative council of the school.
It is also one of the pioneers in the great innovations of the carnival, having revolutionized the Front Commission twice (the first time, already mentioned above) and being responsible for the organized format and concern for the requirements – the famous technical parade – so encouraged today. Birthplace of many greats, the school is proud of its traditions and its history, remaining firm in its mission of bringing joy, culture and knowledge to the Brazilian people.
