The Parading order is decided by an impartial raffle. As always, this year again, in July, LIESA organizers, guests, samba school representatives and the press fill up the Samba City's amphitheater to attend to the drawing of the schools' 2019 parading order.

According to parade regulations, the winner of the 2018 Preliminary Parades of the Second League Schools will open the First League's (the Special Group) Sunday show. Last years weakest school will be the first to parade on Monday.

The Samba Parade order has to be defined in a way that the best schools do not parade on the same day. Thus in the lottery, the remaining schools are divided into equivalent pairs, in order to have a good balance between the participants of Sunday and Monday parades.

So at first, the raffle defines the day. Then the same little balls are drawn again by chance, giving a semi final parade order. If a samba schools wants, they can change for another time on the same night. Thus, luck and a bit of negotiations define the very final parading order.

Sambodromo - General Information

Sambodromo is the Stadium of Samba. It is composed by the Parading Avenue and many concrete structures to the audience (the Sectors) though the Avenue.

The Sambodromo has been projected by the worldwide recognized modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer. It has been built specially for the Rio de Janeiro Samba Parades and has been opened in 1984.

Once it's made of concrete, it seems like a little bit old for today's post-modern eyes. Surrounded by slums (favelas), looks like it's an abandoned place in the rest of the year, because the location has low amount of cultural events beyond Carnival.

However, it comes to life again during Carnival, when the Sambodromo becomes such a magnificent and imponent place, lit up by special effects in the Samba Parades nights, filled with thousands of spectators and surrounded by thousands of other people who couldn't get it.

It has been recently reconstructed according to the original Niemeyer's project and will locate about 72 thousand expectators for the 2018 Samba Parades.
Location
The Sambadromo is placed in the region called Cradle of Samba. It starts at Presidente Vargas avenue, next to Praça Onze and ends at Rua Frei Caneca. The big square at the end of the avenue stands a huge and memorable concrete archway, called Praça da Apoteose. The walkway has been called Professor Darcy Ribeiro, in honor to the idealizer of the Parades in a permanent structure, once the structures used to be set up to the event. The Sambodromo's walkway is a 700 meterlarge structure.
Facilities
There are bathrooms in every sector of the Sambodromo. There are also bars with foods and drinks and the free area, a location behind the Grandstands in Sambodromo with restaurants, ice-cream shops, souvenir shops and more bathrooms.

Security
During the Parades' days, the Sambodromo is considered the safest place in South America. There's a massive concentration of international celebrities, politician and members of noble families in the crowd. The Sambodromo is surrounded by big grids, which nobody can pass without being inspected, for security and commercial matters.

What to take

Be ready for the fact that only sandwiches will be available at the Sambodromo. You can also take plastic bottles with beverages and also plastic storage bowls with foods as sandwiches and fruits. Styrofoam thermal boxes, glass bottles and fireworks are not allowed.

Umbrellas are not a good idea, because they can disturb the vision of the viewers behind you, think about replacing them by raincoats. Some people also take small pillows to the Parades, because they last from the evening to the dawn. For caution, you can also take toilet paper and binoculars to improve your comfort enjoying the Parades.

You can take any type of photographic or video cameras (except for professional video cameras), the Sambodromo is totally safe. But be careful and try not to show your belongings outside the Sambodromo.

What to wear
Wear whatever you prefer. There are no dressing codes to the Samba Parades, but remember that people in Rio wear more comfortable and informal clothes, even to a more serious occasion. Celebrities and anonymous important people in the Open Front Boxes tend to dress up a little more. In the grandstands, the rule is to be the most informal possible. Wear fresh clothes, as it is often hot all night long, but choose dark clothes (so they won't get visibly too dirty).

Arriving time
The gates open at 7:00 p.m. Some people who couldn't get numbered seats have the habit to arrive early to guarantee the best place.
The opening of the Parades is made by King Momo (Rei Momo), a Carnival symbol who crosses the avenue saluting the expectators.

A person watches approximately three to five Samba School parades. So, arriving around 10:00 p.m., you will arrive at the climax of the party. If you have a Grandstand ticket without numbered seat and your health is good enough for the 12 hour-marathon, we reccomend you to arrive early and take your seat.
