Tijuca
Samba nights:
Saturdays 22:00
Colors: red and white
Established in 1953

Champion of the 2009 Parade. Salgueiro is a truly elitist school attracting many celebrities.

Samba School Salgueiro was originally among the first schools to show-case the achievements of the Afro-Brazilians, in stark contrast to its current middle-class fan club. Salgueiro became really famous in the 1960s for its outstanding samba dance performers.
It has a very popular samba hall close to the city center, in one of the safest areas (compared to the other schools based on the hills with slums).
Most years, it uses " fire" in its parades, the symbol of the school.

Sou "Cabra da Peste"
Oh, minha "fia", eu vim de longe pro Salgueiro
Em trovas, errante, guardei
Rainhas e reis e ate heroico bandoleiro
Cabra macho justiceiro
Virgulino e Lampiao
Salve, Antonio Conselheiro
O profeta do sertao
Va de retro, sai assombracao
Volta pra ilusao do alem
No repente do verso
O "bicho" perverso nao pega ninguem
Oh, meu "padinho", venha me abencoar
Meu santo e forte, desse "cao" vai me apartar
Quero chegar ao ceu num sonho divinal
E carnaval! E carnaval!
Salgueiro, teus trovadores sao poetas da cancao
Traz sua corte, e dia de coroacao
Nao se "avexe" não
Salgueiro e amor que mora no peito
Com todo respeito, o rei da folia
Eu sou o cordel branco e encarnado
"Danado" pra versar na Academia
Cord literature (Literatura de Cordel) is very popular in northeastern Brazil. The name origins from the fact that artists tell stories by singing and making spontaneous rhymes while they sell their works which are exposed hanging on cords.
This is one of the most remarkable aspects of Brazilian culture.
